Your Amador County day trip from Sacramento: a timed itinerary with a morning gold mine tour, midday Shenandoah Valley tasting, and dinner in Sutter Creek.

The plan at a glance

From downtown Sacramento, Amador wine country is about 45 minutes via Highway 16 through the rolling hills, or about an hour via Highway 50 to Highway 49 if you prefer the Gold Country route. This itinerary packs a lot in: a morning gold mine tour in Jackson, midday wine tasting around Plymouth, an afternoon stroll through Sutter Creek, and dinner before heading home - or stay over and make it a weekend. Total driving between stops is under an hour, so you spend the day doing things, not sitting in traffic.

9:00 AM - Go underground at Kennedy Gold Mine

Start in Jackson at the Kennedy Gold Mine, one of the deepest gold mines in the world and the centerpiece of the town's Gold Rush story. Guided tours take you through the stamp mill and headframe while docents explain how hard-rock mining actually worked - it is genuinely fascinating even if you think mines are not your thing. Give it about two hours, including the museum and grounds. Wear walking shoes and bring a layer; it is cooler underground. From here, it is a straight 15-minute shot up Highway 49/88 to Plymouth and wine country.

12:00 PM - Wine tasting in Shenandoah Valley

Head for the Shenandoah Valley around Plymouth, where dozens of wineries cluster within a few miles. Andis Wines makes a great first stop with its modern tasting room, and Dobra Zemlja Winery pours characterful old-vine wines just down the road. Plan on two to three wineries with a lunch break - tasting fees are modest and usually waived with a bottle purchase. Unlike Napa, walk-ins are the norm here, so you can follow your nose instead of a reservation spreadsheet. Grab a picnic or sit down somewhere local; you have earned it after the mine.

3:30 PM - Stroll Sutter Creek

Drive 15 minutes to Sutter Creek, the prettiest Main Street in the county. Tour the Knight Foundry, a water-powered machine shop that operated from 1873 into the 1990s and still runs demonstrations. Pop into the Monteverde General Store Museum for a time-capsule look at Gold Rush commerce. Then just wander: antique shops, tasting rooms like Bella Grace Vineyards and Yorba Wines, and some of the best people-watching in the foothills. Grab an ice cream and walk off the wine before dinner.

6:30 PM - Dinner, then home (or stay)

For dinner, Element in Sutter Creek does polished New American food, or head back to Jackson for Italian at Teresa's Place. Either way, you are 45 to 60 minutes from Sacramento on Highway 16 or 49. But here is the local's secret: the best move is to stay over. Hotel Sutter puts you right on Main Street, so the evening can end with a nightcap instead of a highway drive - and Sunday morning in wine country is the calmest, prettiest time to be here.
